Sponsored: Al Majarrah Park reopens in Sharjah with a night of art, music, and public space reimagined from the city’s collective memory

The UAE is home to plenty of green parks that families love, but this week brings something a little different: Al Majarrah Park in Sharjah is reopening. This isn’t just another community space on the list – Al Majarrah Park is redesigned with community memories embedded into its very foundation.

At the heart of the park is a simple idea: collective memory made physical. Residents contributed personal objects tied to everyday life, travel and belonging. Ten of these objects have been reimagined as large-scale sculptures, shifting scale and perspective while inviting new interpretations through public interaction.

As visitors move through the park, these forms take on a life of their own, evolving through use, encounter and exchange. Blending recreation, reflection and public art in the heart of the city, the park reflects Sharjah Art Foundation’s long-term vision of creating spaces that connect people, place and practice.

The reopening is not just a launch; it’s a programme packed with family-friendly fun.

From 7.30pm to 10pm on May 21, the park comes alive with activities designed for all ages. Visitors can join Stroll and Sketch – a self-guided walk that invites you to draw what you see as you move through the space. Urban explorers aged 15 and above can participate in Uncover Al Majarrah Park: Scavenger Hunt where they can follow clues related to architecture, sculpture and materials to discover distinctive structures, signage and traces of everyday life in and around the park.

Families with young children can also visit Art Adventure: Early Learning Station – a hands-on activity area inspired by the park’s shapes, colours and textures.

The evening will end with a live performance by Inam and Friends – a traditional Pashtun music trio led by rabab player Muhammad Inam, joined by tabla player Bakht Wali and harmonium player Saeed Ullah. Expect an atmospheric set blending melodic storytelling with rhythmic improvisation.

Al Majarrah Park was envisioned by renowned artist collective SUPERFLEX in close collaboration with Schul Landscape Architects, Copenhagen, and KWY.studio, Lisbon. The project has been made possible with the support of Sharjah Municipality and the Sharjah Department of Public Works.

Inspired by the site’s history, the park’s zones take shape from the outlines of former courtyards and houses, while winding walkways rise and fall like dunes, echoing the surrounding landscape.

The reopening of Al Majarrah Park reflects Sharjah Art Foundation’s continued commitment to creating accessible public spaces for cultural exchange, learning and community engagement.

The park joins the growing list of permanent public art initiatives spearheaded by the Foundation, including Random International’s Rain Room (2012), opened in Al Majarrah in 2018; Gary Simmons’s Across the Chalk Line (2015), reopened in Al Mureijah Square in 2023; and Kerry James Marshall’s Untitled: Excavation (2022), located outside Al Hamriyah Studios.

And we can’t forget the much-loved and very popular Random International’s Rain Room. For a limited time from May 21 to 24, 2026, visitors to Al Majarrah Park can enjoy two free Rain Room vouchers, plus 10% off all items at the Rain Room Shop.

Al Majarrah Park is open daily from 10am to 10pm. For more information, visit sharjahart.org.
