The African National Congress (ANC) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) are set to meet again this week to continue discussions on the reinstatement of Kenny Kunene as a Johannesburg mayoral committee member.

This follow-up meeting, scheduled before Friday, will go beyond Kunene’s position and focus on broader cooperation between the two parties across Gauteng municipalities.

According to the PA, talks with the ANC on Tuesday were productive, covering not only Kunene’s future role but also proposals for collaboration in other key metros, including Tshwane and Ekurhuleni.

PA deputy president Kenny Kunene confirmed the next round of discussions will involve consultation with the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

“We are going to have a follow-up meeting before Friday because the proposals the ANC has put on the table, we have to discuss with the broader NEC members.

“And then we will then get back to the ANC before Friday on our response to the proposals that are on the table. But we emphasise that the meeting went very well for the PA and we are happy with the posture of the ANC,” Kunene said.

The PA recently backed down from its earlier warning that its president, Gayton McKenzie, would withdraw from the Government of National Unity (GNU) if Kunene was not reinstated.

Kunene reassured supporters that the party will no longer pursue mass resignations from its elected coalition officials, including those serving in the GNU.
