The African National Congress (ANC) has identified improving basic service delivery in local government as its key priority for the year ahead.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the party’s January 8th Statement placed strong emphasis on addressing challenges in under-performing municipalities and rebuilding public confidence.

Mbalula was addressing supporters during the ANC’s 114th anniversary celebrations held in Trompsburg, within the Xhariep District of the Free State, on Saturday.
ANC targets failing municipalities and public trust
According to Mbalula, the governing party recognises that restoring trust requires more than electoral campaigning, with a renewed focus on responsive and effective local governance.
“We work very hard to win confidence, but also to build a social contract with the people. So, it’s not just about elections. It’s about rekindling our connection with the people, not to be distant, and to be amongst them. And at the same time, to provide leadership and address their expectations,” he said.

Mbalula explained that the January 8th Statement sets out a clear message on strengthening municipalities while also addressing broader economic challenges.
“So, the January 8th statement talks about fixing local government and the economy. That is the message,” Mbalula added.
The ANC has repeatedly acknowledged that failures in local government have affected service delivery across many communities, making municipal reform a central focus of its political programme this year.
