The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has hit back at reports regarding an unpaid hotel bill, dismissing what it calls a “misleading narrative” surrounding the issue.

While confirming the outstanding amount owed to the Little Tuscany Boutique Hotel in Sandton, the organisation insists that the matter is being handled appropriately.

According to a legal letter seen by City Press, the boutique hotel has warned the ANCYL that failure to settle the bill—totaling R870,550—could result in legal action.

The bill reportedly stems from expenses incurred for food, accommodation, alcoholic beverages, and conferencing services during multiple meetings. The payment deadline was set for January 17, 2025, but remains outstanding.

ANCYL: Payments Are Periodic, Not Avoided

Addressing the controversy, ANCYL Secretary-General Mntuwoxolo Ngudle assured that the league is committed to settling the debt but emphasised that payments are processed in a structured manner.

“Like any other organisation, the ANC Youth League has creditors whose payments are processed periodically. In this instance, we are committed to ensuring that the outstanding amounts are settled,” Ngudle stated.

He also urged media outlets to refrain from “sensationalising” the issue and instead focus on accurate reporting.

Bill Stems From Meetings, Not Parties

The ANCYL firmly rejected claims that the expenses resulted from parties, clarifying that the costs arose from three separate National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) meetings held at the venue.

“Contrary to what has been portrayed, the bill in question did not arise from a party, as suggested in the media. These were formal meetings convened as part of our organisational processes, not social gatherings or celebratory events.”

The league expressed disappointment over how the issue has been framed in the media, arguing that its relationship with the establishment has been unfairly “reduced to a media spectacle.”

“We value the professional relationship we have maintained and are disheartened by how this matter has been publicly portrayed.”

The ANCYL reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability while continuing to advocate for the interests of South African youth.
