Empirical SCOTUS is a recurring series by Adam Feldman that looks at Supreme Court data, primarily in the form of opinions and oral arguments, to provide insights into the justices’ decision making and what we can expect from the court in the future. The Supreme Court’s next two weeks of oral arguments are set to begin, and it will be telling to see if they resemble the court’s first round of oral arguments, which took place in October. Perhaps most interestingly, throughout these arguments, the justices were more interested in how cases get decided than in making sweeping new rules. We will see if…

Despite an extraordinary effort by the district attorney’s office in Nashville, Tennessee, to reverse a murder conviction that its own prosecutors won more than two decades ago, the state’s Court of Criminal Appeals upheld Russell Maze’s conviction on Friday. The court said there was insufficient evidence to prove his innocence, even though the original medical examiner in the case — whose testimony helped secure the 2004 conviction — recanted last year, concluding that Maze’s son died of natural causes, not abuse. Maze, whose case was the subject of an in-depth article last year by ProPublica and The New York Times…
A worker who was trapped after part of a medieval tower collapsed in the heart of Rome has been rescued, according to local media reports. The man was pulled free at 23:00 local time (22:00 GMT) – nearly twelve hours after a section of the Torre dei Conti, on the edge of the famous Roman Forum and close to the Colosseum, gave way and trapped him beneath. He has been taken to hospital. The Romanian foreign ministry said the trapped man was one of its citizens, as was another worker who was among three others pulled from the rubble. One…

Major Questions is a recurring series by Adam White, which analyzes the court’s approach to administrative law, agencies, and the lower courts. When President Donald Trump announced a new era of tariffs in his “Liberation Day” event, he singlehandedly created a new era of American economic policy and temporarily crashed global markets. The president himself declared it “one of the most important days, in my opinion, in American history.” Since then, markets have recovered, and we’ve grown accustomed – maybe numb – to the spectacle of a president constantly making, unmaking, and remaking tariffs in response to everything from Chinese negotiations to Canadian TV commercials. But…
