South Africa’s men hockey team conceded four goals in a row for a second time in their FIH Nations Cup campaign in Kuala Lumpur, but this time were unable to complete the comeback and lost 4-3 to France. On Sunday they had staged a rousing fightback to draw 4-4 with Wales. South Africa came into the clash full of belief after taking a point off Wales after being 4-0 down and celebrated a special milestone for Matt de Sousa, who earned his 50th cap. But the mood was quickly checked when French captain Victor Charlet opened the scoring in the…

“We need your voice.”That’s the message rippling through social media as Nigerian celebrities speak out and call for urgent help for the victims of the recent attacks in Benue State. At least 100 people have been killed in north-central Nigeria following an overnight attack by gunmen, prompting Amnesty International to urge the government to end the “almost daily bloodshed in Benue State.” The attack, which began late Friday and continued into the early hours of Saturday, took place in Yelwata, a community in Benue. “Amnesty International has been documenting the alarming escalation of attacks across Benue State where gunmen have…

We can either continue playing the ostrich and keep being politically correct, or we can just say the truth as it is. One of the overarching tragedies of the Nigerian state is the normalisation of the abnormal. Over the weekend, over 200 people, who were mostly women and children, in Benue State lost their lives in the most gruesome and barbaric manner possible. There is no serious country in the world in 2025 where over 200 people are killed in a single day, and everyone continues with business as usual. The tragedy should incite a state of emergency. Aside from…

South African Olympic triathlete Jamie Riddle is recovering and reflecting on his debut Cairns Ironman, only two weeks after a career best performance in the San Francisco T100 Triathlon, writes MARK LEMKE. The 24-year-old put on a courageous display in Australia, having to dig deep into his reserves to eventually finish in fourth place in Cairns, in 8hr 15sec, which was 10 minutes behind winner Matthew Marquardt (USA) who clocked 7:50:41 for the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run. This is despite ‘hitting the wall’ 150km into the bike ride, causing ‘the lights to go out’. This worrying moment…
