    Authorities press charges in wake of Raygun the baboon’s brutal killing

    The NSPCA has taken a significant step forward by filing charges in the horrific killing of Raygun, a baboon whose brutal death has ignited widespread public anger.

    Despite facing considerable resistance from community members throughout the investigation, the NSPCA has gathered sufficient evidence to push the case into the hands of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

    Raygun’s death, marked by extreme violence, has left many demanding accountability.

    Chief Inspector Douglas Wolhuter, head of the NSPCA’s Wildlife Protection Unit, revealed that a detailed pathology report was pivotal in uncovering the severity of Raygun’s injuries, confirming he suffered extensively before his demise.

    The investigation, however, was far from straightforward.

    Wolhuter noted that local reluctance to provide information created significant hurdles, slowing progress and limiting leads.

    “This was not an easy case. It was met with resistance at every turn. Despite the many obstacles, the NSPCA remained the driving force behind this investigation, ensuring that the case was pursued,” he said, as per Pretoria Rekord, adding: “The investigation was hampered by the reluctance of the local community to come forward with information or additional evidence. This lack of cooperation created a significant deadlock, leaving the NSPCA with limited avenues to pursue further leads.”

    The shocking incident took place near Botleng Secondary School in Pretoria, where Raygun was attacked by a group of schoolchildren.

    Disturbing videos circulating online show the baboon atop the school roof, being chased by a student.

    In a second clip, a crowd of children is seen beating Raygun mercilessly before setting him ablaze, all while chanting and dancing around him.

    The footage has left viewers horrified and sparked calls for justice.

    Just days before the attack, Raygun had been on the verge of freedom.

    The Owl Rescue Centre had been tracking his movements across Pretoria, where he’d been spotted wandering in search of a new troop near Bronkhorstspruit.

    Known to pose no danger to humans, his tragic end has struck a chord with animal lovers.

    Now under SAPS jurisdiction, the case will see an appointed Investigating Officer collect statements from the suspects and guide the legal process forward.

    Wolhuter assured that the NSPCA remains committed, vowing to monitor the case closely.

    As the case progresses, many hope it will shed light on the senseless violence that ended Raygun’s life and deliver accountability for those responsible.
