    Black Conveyancers Association in celebration of 30 years of democracy celebrate women’s contribution in the legal profession

    The Black Conveyancers Association (BCA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and gala dinner on 25 and 26 October 2024 in Cape Town. In a press release the BCA said that the dinner was held in celebration of the gazetting of the Legal Sector Code and the establishment of the Legal Sector Transformation Fund.

    The AGM was not only attended by BCA members, but it was also graced by Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau. Mr Godongwana reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the transformation of the legal profession and society. The statement further stated that Mr Godongwana said that transformation is a constitutional imperative which the Government of National Unity is pursuing in the national interest.

    The BCA presented a prestigious award to legal practitioner and author, Christine Qunta, whom they described as a trailblazer and adherent of transformation of the legal profession. The BCA said that Ms Qunta’s award was in line with the celebration of 30 years of democracy and in recognition of the achievement made by women. The BCA added that in line with growing momentum of supporting women in leadership in the legal profession, Pumla Mncwango was elected the president of the BCA. Ms Mncwango is the second woman to hold the position of president in the organisation. The BCA said that this was significant as the country had just celebrated its first woman Chief Justice.

    The BCA said that Ms Mncwango’s election to presidency represents a milestone as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the organisation since its establishment in 2005. Other elected members of the national executive committee of the BCA are –

    • First Deputy President: Dr Ray Brink;
    • Second Deputy President: Maboku Mangena;
    • General Secretary: Charlotte Mahlatji; and
    • Treasurer-general: Dinesh Harkoo.

    The following are additional members of the NEC –

    • Tando Ngeno;
    • Goitse Mataboge;
    • Pumeza Bija; and
    • Nande Mheshe.
