The Cape Town Cruise Terminal is experiencing an impressively busy 2024/25 season.

More than 20 cruise liners will be making a stop-over in Cape Town this month alone, boosting tourism and local businesses.

Moreover, a total of 76 ship calls are scheduled so far for the cruise period which ends in June.

As reported by IOL, this is an increase from 67 last year.

This growth in numbers is expected to usher in thousands of tourists to the region, presenting a significant opportunity for local businesses and the tourism industry.

During the 2023/2024 season, cruise tourism contributed R1.32 billion to the regional economy. This is an increase from R1.2 billion in the previous year.

As reported by Bizcommunity, the month of March has traditionally been a key month for cruise tourism. Cape Town’s late-summer weather makes the destination a popular stop on international cruise routes.

Moreover, many ships also reposition between hemispheres during March, thus making Cape Town an attractive destination for both travellers and operators.

According to Wrenelle Stander, CEO of Wesgro, the growth in cruise tourism highlights Cape Town’s growing reputation as a must-visit destination.

Wesgro is the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the Western Cape.

‘Beyond the immediate tourism boost, the industry has positive ripple effects, from tour operators and transport services, to restaurants, hotels and retailers,’ added Stander.

With more ships expected, the City is also preparing for increased activity in and around the terminal.

The V&A Waterfront, which operates the Cape Town Cruise Terminal, has implemented enhanced security measures. Furthermore, designated transport options for cruise passengers have been arranged.

The number of traffic marshalls will also be increased on days when high volumes are expected.
