Under idyllic tennis conditions, and on arguably one of the world’s most glamorous courts, world No 3 Carlos Alcaraz celebrated a new feat on Thursday afternoon.

In defeating world No 84 Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-1, Alcaraz progressed to his first Rolex Monte-Carlo quarter-final.

The setting enhanced his victory, as the Tennis sur mer vibe on this Côte d’Azur sizzled on a packed Court Rainier III.

The waves of the Mediterranean Sea backdrop glistened to the pumping music played during the breaks, and the red clay raged red beneath the glow of the sun, ready for combat.

The straight-sets scoreline did not reflect the level of gameplay and strategy that Alcaraz had to deploy, particularly in the first set.

The match opened with a challenging start from the Spanish star, who lost points due to unforced errors.

Ultimately, his aggressive gameplay and strategy proved too much for his German opponent.

    ‘Real battle’

At his post-match press conference, Alcaraz acknowledged the challenges he faced at the start of the match due to long rallies and close games, calling the first set “a real battle”.

He credited Altmaier’s level saying that “it was a tough match, because Daniel is playing great tennis”.

Alcaraz’s next round opponent is world No 15-ranked Arthur Fils.

It will be their first meeting.

When asked about his expectations of the match, Alcaraz noted Fils’s accomplishment: “he’s the only player who made at least the quarter-final in every Masters 1000”.

Despite this feat, Alcaraz was excited about the prospect.

“I’m not gonna be scared… I’m excited about facing him for the first time and see how it’s gonna be”.
