Marco van Staden says it will “mean a lot” to make his 100th appearance for the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
The Springbok forward has taken a long road to reach the landmark, climbing through the ranks of club and varsity rugby before eventually establishing himself at professional level.
These days he is a critical cog in both the Bulls and Bok artillery with his ability to play flank and hooker, giving coaches a critical advantage when it comes to squad selection.

Bok coach Rassie Erasmus utilised Van Staden at hooker last season and when the Bulls suffered injuries at hooker, it was a simple case of plug-and-play by having him cover both positions.
“Because I filled that role with the Springboks last season, it was easier to move into it again,” he said on Tuesday ahead of the north-south derby against the Stormers.
“In general play it’s very similar. The big differences are the throwing and the scrumming. I’ve put in a lot of work on the scrums and on my lineout throwing.
“I’m very comfortable doing both roles.”

Van Staden said a century of appearances was a significant milestone.
“It means a lot to me. It’s a big privilege to play 100 games for the Bulls.
“Looking back at where it started and the route I took, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. I’ve learned a lot along the way and I’ve met great people – teammates, coaches and staff who all played a role.”
Van Staden said simply wearing the Bulls jersey remains his greatest motivation.
“Every game is special for me,” he said. “I know how short a career can be, so I try to treat every game like it could be my last and give everything I have. To put on the Bulls jersey is always special.”

Bulls captain Marcell Coetzee paid tribute to his teammate, describing him as one of their most committed and selfless players.
“When I think of Marco, the first word that comes to mind is ‘warrior’,” Coetzee said. “He’s fearless and he gives his heart and soul for this union every single day. He’s a humble guy who always puts the team first.”
