The City of Johannesburg has moved quickly to dismiss reports suggesting that the ANC’s headquarters, Luthuli House, was plunged into darkness over unpaid municipal bills.

City of Joburg Denies Luthuli House Electricity Cut

Reports circulating online claimed that Luthuli House owed the City R365,000 and had its electricity supply disconnected as part of a municipal debt crackdown. However, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has firmly rejected these allegations.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Morero said the ANC headquarters was never targeted for disconnection in December.

“The City of Johannesburg confirms that Luthuli House has not been disconnected. It was not part of the City’s disconnection program for this month, and there was no City-led electricity cut-off at that site, contrary to claims,” Morero said.

Mayor Challenges Media to Produce Proof

Morero went further, challenging media houses that published the claims to back them up with verifiable evidence.

“If a media house has evidence to the contrary, the City demands that they provide specific details, including date, time, point of supply or meter number, and photos, for verification with the relevant operational teams. The City also insists that the false statement be rectified,” he said.

The mayor also urged the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information, warning against the spread of misinformation.

“Cease spreading Fake News,” Morero added.

Project Lokisa Targets Joburg’s Biggest Defaulters

The denial comes amid intensified efforts by the City to recover outstanding municipal debt. Earlier this year, Johannesburg launched its aggressive credit control initiative, Project Lokisa.

More than 1,300 residential customers owing a combined R978 million have already been flagged for persistent non-payment.

“The City of Johannesburg is tightening the screws on its worst defaulters, who now face the removal of their entire electricity infrastructure – including meters – under its aggressive credit control drive, Project Lokisa,” the City said previously.
