As an expat, when I’m looking for home comforts, I often find it in food and therefore I’m always searching for new places to visit when I’m missing home. I found this comfort in Mezzanine Bar & Kitchen.

    The spot

Sitting pretty in Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Mezzanine Bar & Kitchen is exactly where you want to be when you’re after relaxed vibes with a side of great views. Overlooking the waterways, with the Burj Al Arab peeking out in the background, it feels casual and welcoming, whether you’re popping in after a wander around the Souk or settling in for a long, leisurely meal. Think classic gastropub energy, but in a very Dubai setting, best of both worlds we think?

    The food

This is comfort food through and through. We kicked things off with the smashed burrata salad, fresh but indulgent, and crispy fried wings that were crunchy, juicy and dangerously moreish.

Mains leaned into hearty classics. The chicken and mushroom pie came wrapped in golden, flaky pastry with a rich, savoury filling; proper comfort on a plate. The wagyu sirloin steak was full of flavour, cooked well and satisfyingly substantial without being overcomplicated. The chips are big chunky ones, something different from most places, and they’re delicious.

Dessert kept things cosy. A warm apple crumble with custard hit all the nostalgic notes, while the soft-baked cookie was gooey, sweet and ideal for ending the meal on a (sugar) high.

There’s no shortage of choice at the bar, with a cocktail list that’s far more extensive than you might expect from a gastropub. From classics to crowd-pleasing signatures, it’s easy to find something whether you’re in the mood for a pre-dinner sip or a second (or third). Add a solid wine list and plenty of beers, and it’s a great spot to linger long after the plates are cleared.

    The service

Service was friendly and easygoing, matching the laid-back feel of the place. Staff were attentive, happy to chat through the menu and quick to make sure everything arrived just as it should. You can also crack some jokes with them too which especially makes it feel like home.

Verdict: Comfort food meets ‘just one more drink’.
