The 2025 Hollywoodbets Super League season is slowly taking shape despite delays and disruptions to the start of the campaign and, while some teams have already seen action, others are still waiting for their first competitive matches due to ongoing negotiations between SAFA and Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings (Hollywoodbets).

With the league technically in its fifth round of fixtures, three teams—Royal AM, Richmond United, and the University of Pretoria—are yet to play.

Despite the staggered start, Copperbelt FC have made an impressive statement early in the season. They currently top the log standings after securing a 2-0 victory over TUT Football Club, thanks to goals from Hlulani Manganyi (54’) and Dined Mfati (94’).

Meanwhile, Matsantsantsa’s inconsistent form continues, with two draws and a loss so far. Their most recent draw was a goalless stalemate against TS Galaxy Queens in a midweek fixture at TUT Main Campus.

The University of Fort Hare pulled off a surprise 1-0 win against the University of Johannesburg, with Reitumetse Chabana scoring the decisive goal. They followed that up with a dramatic 2-2 draw against JVW FC.

Fort Hare initially led and look certain for victory after a brace from Michelle Sampson (74’ and 78’), but JVW clawed their way back into the game, courtesy of goals from highly experienced Nompumelelo Nyandeni (91’) and Boitumelo Rasehlo (94’) salvaged a point for the Bedfordview-based side.

UJ bounced back from their loss against Fort Hare with a convincing 2-0 win over City Lads. Star forward Ayesha Moosa opened her 2025 goal account in the 20th minute, while Unathi Mjijwa, coming off the bench, sealed the victory with a late goal.

A highly anticipated clash between defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and perennial runners-up the University of the Western Cape (UWC) was delayed due to the home side failing to organise medics on time.

When the match eventually kicked off, a goal from 2024 Golden Boot winner Boitumelo Rabale proved enough to secure the win for Banyana Ba Style in a fiercely contested encounter.

Sundowns assistant coach Agnes Nkosi praised her team’s resilience: “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate the players and the entire technical team.”

“The intensity of the game was very high, and I think fatigue played a role, but I’m pleased with how the team managed it and maintained that intensity throughout.”

Defender Khutso Pila, making her return to Sundowns after a stint with AmaTuks, reflected on her debut performance:

“We got the three points, and I gave my best. It was my first game, and playing for a big club like Sundowns is a huge opportunity. Going forward, we have to keep building and push even harder.”

While happy with the win, Coach Nkosi acknowledged areas for improvement: “We need to work on our final third. We created so many chances but didn’t capitalise on them. Mistakes happen in football, but players need to keep their heads high. If you dwell on mistakes, it affects your game.”

With the season gradually picking up pace, teams will be eager to find consistency despite the early disruptions. The league’s full schedule remains uncertain as negotiations continue, but the competition on the field is already heating up.
