The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has announced its intention to table a motion of no confidence against Premier Panyaza Lesufi after his administration was found to have unlawfully deployed the province’s crime prevention wardens.

The move comes shortly after Lesufi revealed plans to phase out the controversial unit on Wednesday, just hours before the Public Protector released a damning report on the programme.

During a media briefing in Johannesburg on Thursday, DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga called for Lesufi’s immediate removal, accusing him of endangering the lives of more than 8,000 wardens through unlawful actions.

“Panyaza cannot continue to be the Premier of Gauteng,” Msimanga declared. “There are so many things that have happened that make us believe that a motion of no confidence against Panyaza is what’s needed.”

The DA confirmed it will formally push for the motion to be debated in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
