The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng says it has engaged with most political parties in the provincial legislature to rally support for its motion of no confidence against Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

Members of the legislature are currently debating the motion, which follows the disbandment of the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens — a unit the premier introduced without constitutional backing, according to the DA.

The opposition party also accuses Lesufi of withholding several forensic investigation reports and mishandling issues linked to the Tembisa Hospital tender corruption scandal.

Addressing journalists on Friday morning, the DA’s Solly Msimanga said he could not confirm whether any parties had formally committed to backing the motion.

“We might not have the numbers, but we don’t want a secret ballot because we want the people of Gauteng to know who’s voting for what. Political parties cannot continuously dupe the people of Gauteng.

“They cannot raise issues and when the time comes to do something, they do nothing,” he said.

The vote comes amid heightened political tension in the province, with the DA positioning its motion as a test of accountability for the premier.

Whether it will succeed, however, rests on whether other parties break ranks during the vote.
