Outgoing African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg chairperson Dada Morero says he is not worried about the possibility of losing his bid for re-election, insisting it would not signal the end of his political life.

Thursday marks the second day of the ANC’s regional elective conference, taking place at the Cedar Woods Hotel in Sandton, where crucial votes will determine who leads the party in the city for the next three years.

Morero is vying for another term but is facing a formidable challenge from Loyiso Masuku, who has received strong backing from several branches.

When Masuku arrived at the conference venue on Wednesday evening, delegates greeted him with loud cheers, with many describing him as the race’s unexpected contender.

Insiders told reporters that Masuku is proving to be highly competitive, with both candidates running almost evenly. Their support among delegates is reportedly separated by only a narrow margin.

Despite the tight race, Morero has emphasised that a loss would not push him out of the organisation.

“If I don’t win as a chair, I will probably be elected as an additional member, and then I’ll be given a particular responsibility, or I may go back to my branch and participate there,” he said.

Should Morero be defeated, the ANC will also need to decide whether he continues serving as Johannesburg mayor for the remainder of the local government term, which ends in November 2026.
