Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chairperson Helen Zille is reportedly considering a bold return to frontline politics — this time, as a potential mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg in the 2026 local government elections.
Encouraged by senior party members, Zille confirmed to City Press that she is “seriously contemplating” the idea of entering the race. If she decides to run, she stressed that she would still undergo the DA’s official selection process, like any other candidate.

“It will be the toughest challenge of my life,” Zille admitted, “but I will do anything to save the city to which I owe my youth.”
The former Western Cape Premier believes the DA has a genuine shot at surpassing the ANC in Johannesburg, a city currently plagued by widespread infrastructure failure and governance woes.

DA Targets Control of Gauteng’s Economic Powerhouses
Zille’s potential candidacy is aligned with the DA’s broader strategy to gain control of key metros — especially in Gauteng — in the next municipal elections.
“The DA doesn’t need to win more than 50% of the vote,” Zille previously stated, “as coalition governments are a viable path to power in local government.”
She emphasised that winning the metros is crucial: “If the DA becomes the largest party in all Gauteng’s metros, the party will essentially control the region’s economy.”
Zille also believes a vote share of over 20% in a proportional representation (PR) system would be a strong result. “We will try to be the biggest party in as many local governments as we can,” she affirmed.

The DA has been actively scouting for mayoral candidates for months, looking to strengthen its leadership bench in anticipation of a high-stakes electoral battle in 2026.
Joburg’s Current Crisis and the ANC’s “Bomb Squad” Response
Zille’s possible entry into the mayoral race comes as Johannesburg faces mounting service delivery failures under the current ANC Mayor Dada Morero.
To confront the crisis, Morero recently appointed a 12-member “bomb squad” led by ANC veteran Snuki Zikalala. The team is tasked with rapid responses to service delivery issues, including combating illegal dumping, fixing streetlights, addressing sewage leaks, and repairing pothole-ridden roads.
The squad also aims to tackle rising crime, formalise informal settlements, and mitigate ongoing water and power outages — all while providing oversight for the mayor’s office.
Despite these efforts, many residents remain unconvinced the ANC can stem the city’s decline. With Johannesburg described as being in “free fall,” the stage may be set for a high-profile showdown if Zille officially enters the ring.
