Dubai roadworks are becoming more noticeable across the city, and there’s a reason for it
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is carrying out a major Dubai roadworks project across Umm Suqeim Street, Al Wasl Road, Al Safa Street and several intersections along Jumeirah Street.
The improvements are designed to help ease congestion, improve traffic flow and support the city’s growing population.
The project includes new bridges and tunnels, wider roads, upgraded pedestrian walkways and new cycling tracks.
Here are the roads affected and what drivers can expect.
Umm Suqeim Street
Works on Umm Suqeim Street form part of the wider Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor development.
What’s changing?
- Six major intersections will be upgraded
- Four bridges and two tunnels will be built
- Road capacity will increase to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions
- Travel times are expected to drop from around 20 minutes to six minutes
The project will improve access to areas including Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Manara, Al Sufouh, Umm Al Sheif, Al Barsha and Al Quoz.
Al Wasl Road
One of the biggest upgrades is taking place along Al Wasl Road, stretching around 15km from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street.
What’s changing?
- Seven key intersections will be upgraded
- Roads will be widened from two lanes to three lanes in each direction
- Five new tunnels will be constructed
- Capacity will increase from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour
- Journey times are expected to be reduced by up to 50%

Al Safa Street
The Al Safa Street project covers the section between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl Road.
What’s changing?
- Road widening works
- Junction improvements
- Traffic signal upgrades
- Two bridges and two tunnels
- Capacity will double from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour
Travel times are expected to fall from around 12 minutes to just three minutes once works are complete.
Jumeirah Street
The RTA is also upgrading seven intersections along Jumeirah Street.
The affected junctions include:
- Al Thanya Street
- Al Manara Street
- Umm Al Sheif Street
- Al Urouba Street
- 39B Street
- Al Hudaiba Street
- 2nd December Street
The aim is to improve traffic flow, increase road capacity and reduce congestion along one of Dubai’s busiest corridors.
When will the works be completed?
The RTA has not yet announced an official completion date for the project. We’ll update this story as more information becomes available.
