Yaounde – Speculation is mounting over President Paul Biya’s potential bid for an unprecedented eighth term following his New Year’s Eve address. At 91 years old, Biya’s prolonged tenure has left many Cameroonians questioning his fitness for leadership, fueling a growing call for change across the nation.
Prominent voices within the country, including religious leaders, have begun to amplify this sentiment. Cabral Libii, leader of the PCRN party, recently urged the clergy to step up and champion the movement for renewal. His appeal seems to have struck a chord, as several church leaders have openly opposed Biya’s rumored candidacy.
However, the movement has not been without controversy. A statement allegedly from Mgr Emmanuel Dassi Youfang, Bishop of Bafia, surfaced, suggesting that “Every Cameroonian who meets the constitutional requirements has the right to run for president.” This was quickly denounced as false by the Diocese of Bafia.
“The Diocese of Bafia denounces this ‘fake news’ and clarifies that Mgr. Emmanuel Dassi Youfang is not the author of these statements,” read an official communiqué.
The Catholic Church has officially opposed any new term for Biya. Notably, the Bishop of Yagoua expressed his frustrations, famously stating that “even the devil would take power instead of Paul Biya.” Speaking to Equinoxe TV, he lamented the ongoing crisis in the North-West region, highlighting that “a little effort could have resolved the war by now.”
He questioned the morality of encouraging a 92-year-old to continue in such a demanding role. “Would you expect your 92-year-old grandfather to till fields with a hoe and machete? It’s absurd. People are tired. Enough is enough,” he declared, emphasizing the public’s growing frustration.
As the debate over Biya’s potential candidacy grows louder, the unified voices of Cameroonian citizens and clergy reflect an undeniable desire for leadership renewal and a brighter future for the nation.
