Scoop Makhathini had some sharp words for the South African hip-hop scene during his appearance on Metro FM’s Not Like Usshow on Friday, 14 August 2026, and listeners were not ready for the level of candour he brought to the mic.
The veteran broadcaster opened up about a difficult two-year stretch during which he stepped away from social media and, by his own account, watched his phone go completely silent. No calls from strangers, and crucially, no calls from the people he had expected to show up for him.

Makhathini made it clear that his frustration was directed specifically at the hip-hop community, calling out what he described as opportunistic behaviour from peers who only came knocking once things were looking up for him again.

“I went for two years off social media, no work. And you know what? I looked at my phone, and it never rang,” he said. “But now a brother has a little bit of shine like his Cactus Jack jacket. And yay, the phone don’t stop ringing.”
He was particularly critical of the tone these reconnections took, saying the sudden “big bro” greetings felt hollow and patronising given the silence that had preceded them.
“Manipulative, patronising, and you don’t love people. You just love using people when you can gain something from them,” he added, quoting Drake to close out his point.

Mzansi reacts to Scott Makhathini’s rant about fake friends
The clip stirred up strong reactions online, with many people relating to the sentiment while others pushed back on how Makhathini chose to handle it.
“This is not something new mos. No one checks up on you when you are in your dark hole. Finding at this age is what is causing a crash out.”
