LAGOS, NIGERIA – Once a towering figure in diplomatic and financial circles, Dr. Nfor Susungi, a former Cameroonian diplomat and ex-director at the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Finance d’Atlantique (CFdA), has been found in a distressing state on the streets of Lagos, Nigeria. A video circulating on social media shows him frail, disoriented, and barely able to recognize those calling his name.

A longtime advocate for the liberation of Ambazonia, Dr. Susungi had settled in Lagos after retirement, where he sought to invest in business opportunities. However, according to unconfirmed reports, he was allegedly defrauded of $2 million by individuals he believed to be legitimate business partners. Sources suggest that after realizing he had been deceived and left with nothing, he collapsed and vanished into the streets of Lagos. On Wednesday, February 5, he was discovered lying helpless by the street in Badagri, Lagos.

A video filmed on the spot in Badagri, captures the once-respected diplomat lying on his back, visibly emaciated and incoherent. His speech is inconsistent, and he appears unable to recognize his surroundings. The footage has sparked shock and sorrow among those who knew him, given his previous stature as a leading economic and political voice in Africa.

    Family Releases Statement

Dr. Susungi was photographed lying down by the street in Badagri, Lagos, Nigeria at approximately 1pm, Wednesday, February. 5th

An unsigned statement allegedly from Dr. Susungi’s family has acknowledged his plight, though with a different account of the events leading to his current condition. The statement explains that he has been a target of fraudsters for years, with continued manipulation and deceit draining both his finances and his health.

“Our father is based in Lagos, Nigeria. His medical condition has been relatively unstable and has worsened in recent days. This is principally due to manipulation from a gang of fraudsters who have duped him over the years since he went on retirement to start his business in Lagos,” the statement reads.

The family further claims that repeated attempts to rescue him from these fraudsters have come at great financial loss and that his current situation is a result of their refusal to comply with continued extortion attempts.

“The family has also suffered a lot of financial losses trying to rescue him from one danger or another due to the manipulations from this gang of fraudsters. The rumor about his situation is due to the family’s refusal to comply with the continual demands of these fraudsters. We are taking the necessary legal procedures to do the needful to save his life and the lives of those commissioned to do so. Serious precautions are required to achieve this undertaking. We call on the Wimbum Community and the entire people to be vigilant.”

Dr. Susungi’s tragic downfall is a grim warning of how even the most respected figures can fall victim to fraud and betrayal. His case highlights the dangers of financial scams in Nigeria and the importance of vigilance when engaging in business investments.

The incident has left many in the Ambazonian and Wimbum communities deeply concerned. Once a man of influence, power, and prestige, Dr. Susungi now fights for his survival on the streets of a foreign city.

This developing story raises serious questions: How did a man of such stature end up in such a dire state? Who are the fraudsters responsible for his downfall? And what steps will be taken to ensure he recovers his health and safety?

ABS News will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they emerge.
