However, before you lace up your boots and hit the trail, it is essential to be well-prepared for the journey ahead.

Consider this guide to overnight hiking:

    Route Planning

Planning your route is one of the most important things you will have to do in preparation for your hike.

Research trails and choose one that is suitable for your skill level and physical condition.

On your hike, ensure that you carry a physical map and compass, even if you intend to use a GPS device. After all, technology can fail at times.

    Packing and gear

The kind of gear you use on your hike can be a game-changer. Invest in lightweight, high-quality gear which includes a good sleeping bag, backpack and tent.

When it comes to food and water, ensure that you pack lightweight, high-energy foods such as energy bars and dried fruit. Make sure you carry enough water.

    Dress code

It is helpful to dress in layers as this will enable you to adapt to changing weather conditions. Ensure that your base layer is moisture-wicking and then add insulating layers. See to it that your outer layer is waterproof.

In order to prevent blisters, wear hiking boots that sturdy and comfortable. If they are new, be sure to break them in beforehand.

    Safety

Carry a basic first aid kit which includes all the necessary items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes and other medication you may need.

Before you embark on your journey, inform someone of your itinerary and when you are expected to return.

    Nature and sustainability

On your overnight hiking experience, make sure that you respect nature and follow the ‘leave no trace’ principle. Stay on designated trails, do not litter and avoid disturbing wildlife.

    Be present and enjoy

Ultimately, it is important to take your time and enjoy the experience. Remember that the journey is just as important as the destination.

Take breaks when necessary and enjoy the scenery. Hydrate and refuel regularly.

Be present and connect with nature as you enjoy its breathtaking beauty.
