InfraCo is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance energy efficiency at its base stations across Zimbabwe.

InfraCo, an entity spun off from the Zimbabwean telecommunications provider Econet Wireless, aims for ongoing growth of its tower operations within Zimbabwe. Concurrently, it is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline energy usage at its various base stations.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by InfraCo, which is listed on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange, the company broadened its application of AI during the quarter concluding in May 2026. This expansion was aimed at refining predictive maintenance for generators, maximizing fuel efficiency, and boosting the overall dependability of its base station infrastructure.

Frequent and severe power outages in Zimbabwe often compel network operators to bear extra expenses by operating diesel generators.

Tatenda Alice Ngowe, InfraCo’s company secretary, stated in a recent trading update that the introduction of an AI Fuel Manager solution has reduced energy consumption while improving availability and uptime.

Additionally, InfraCo is developing an AI-powered Remote Monitoring System and a Digital Twin project, which will facilitate digital oversight and remote servicing of its base stations.

The primary goal of these AI-driven tools is to enhance the operational efficiency of the company’s various technology platforms.

InfraCo’s priorities for the rest of the year include the ongoing expansion of its tower assets and expediting the solar power initiative managed by its PowerCo subsidiary.

Beyond providing solar energy to InfraCo’s towers, PowerCo also extends its supply to other commercial clients.

Construction has begun on the initial phase of a 100MW solar farm. This facility is designed to deliver renewable energy to various projects within Econet Tech City in Harare, encompassing a data center and the solar power plant itself.

This Tech City, slated for development over a five-year period, is integrated into InfraCo’s property division, which is responsible for supporting the establishment of tower sites and other essential infrastructure.

InfraCo installed 90 new base stations during the quarter that concluded in May.

Dr. Douglas Mboweni, the CEO of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, recently announced that the company is phasing out its 2G and 3G sites. The freed-up spectrum will be reallocated to bolster 4G and 5G service capabilities.

As Zimbabwe’s leading mobile network operator, Econet handles a significant portion of the nation’s increasing data traffic, largely due to its extensive deployment of LTE and 5G base stations.

Ngowe reported that InfraCo reinvested 17% of its generated revenue into financing various capital projects.
