Swedish women’s top-flight club BK Häcken have completed the signing of Nigerian international Joy Omewa from English side Nottingham Forest, with the striker penning a contract that will keep her at the club until the end of the 2029 season.
The 23-year-old joins the Damallsvenskan outfit after a brief spell with Nottingham Forest and is expected to link up with her new teammates after representing Nigeria at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking after completing the move, the Super Falcons forward expressed her excitement about beginning a new chapter in Sweden.
“I want to contribute with joy – ‘Joy’ – just like my name.
I know that BK Häcken is a fantastic club that helps its talents develop. I feel that this is the right place for me.”
Häcken praise Nigerian striker
BK Häcken Football Director Martin Ericsson described Omewa as a complete striker whose qualities will strengthen the club’s attacking options.
“Joy is a physically dominant player with a lot of power, but also a striker who is involved in the game and a killer in the box. Her instinct for scoring goals is clear and she is always looking for the next opportunity.
Joy will bring us energy both on and off the pitch with her personality and her drive to win and score goals. We look forward to her joining us after the African Championships. A warm welcome to Hisingen!”
Time in Denmark shaped her development
Reflecting on her rise, Omewa credited her time in Denmark with transforming her into a more clinical goalscorer.
“I mainly developed my ability to score goals, especially positional play in the penalty area. I worked a lot on mastering how to be as efficient as possible inside the box.
It means a lot. It’s been a dream since I was little, so getting to score those two goals was incredibly important to me.”
Omewa has been named in Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where she will represent the Super Falcons before joining BK Häcken.
She will reunite at the Swedish club with fellow Nigerian international Halimatu Ayinde, who is already part of the BK Häcken squad, as the club strengthens its ranks ahead of the remainder of the season.
From Nigeria to Europe
Omewa began her career in Nigeria with Confluence Queens before moving to Danish club B93 after leaving her home country at the age of 17.
After one season at B93, she joined Fortuna Hjørring, where she spent more than four years and established herself as one of the most prolific forwards in Danish women’s football.
During the 2024/25 season, she scored 22 league goals in 24 matches to finish as the Danish league’s top scorer, helping Fortuna Hjørring win both the league title and the Danish Cup. Across her time at the club, she registered 55 league goals and added seven goals in European competitions before earning a move to Nottingham Forest.
