EFF leader Julius Malema claims he is being targeted for his political beliefs as he prepares to return to court for pre-sentencing next month, following his conviction for breaching South Africa’s gun laws.

Malema was earlier this year found guilty over a 2018 incident in which he fired a firearm during an EFF rally in the Eastern Cape. The case, which has drawn widespread attention, will continue at the East London Magistrates’ Court.

The EFF leader insists the ruling is part of a broader effort to silence him, alleging the presiding magistrate is acting with political intent.

“I’ve been found guilty, not because I committed a crime, but because she’s punishing me for my political views and using a nonexistent criminal matter which is not there.”

Julius Malema Says Court Ruling Is Politically Driven

Malema maintains the court’s decision is tainted by bias and argues that the justice system is being “weaponised” against him. His remarks come amid growing political tensions ahead of the sentencing phase.

EFF Leader Calls on Supporters to Mobilise

The EFF commander-in-chief has urged South Africans—particularly those who believe in the rule of law—to stand against what he views as political persecution.

“Anyone who loves the law of this country, who agrees that presiding officers must never use the courts to settle political scores, have got a reason to come out in their numbers on the 23rd and say, not in the name of our law, not in the name of our constitution, are you going to use your political differences with Malema to abuse what is entrusted with you?”
