Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene has officially returned as Johannesburg’s Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Transport. His reinstatement was confirmed by City of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero after weeks of political uncertainty.
Kunene’s comeback follows tense negotiations between the African National Congress (ANC) and the PA, with the coalition facing threats of collapse if the matter was not resolved.

Hawks Raid at Sandton Home Sparked Suspension
The controversy dates back to July, when the Hawks conducted a raid at the Sandton residence of businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, who faces charges of murder and organised crime. Kunene was present during the raid but was not taken into custody.
He later explained that he was at Molefe’s home for a media interview. However, the incident triggered widespread speculation about his associations and cast doubts over his political role.

In response to the controversy, the PA suspended Kunene pending an internal investigation. After weeks of review, the party announced that he had been cleared of any wrongdoing, paving the way for his reinstatement to the key transport portfolio in Johannesburg.
Kunene’s return marks a significant step in stabilising the ANC-PA partnership within the Government of National Unity.
