Suhum, Ghana – The campaign team for Kwadjo Asante, the sitting Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency, has denied rumors that he is stepping down as an independent candidate in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections. Known locally as “Boafo,” Asante remains committed to contesting the Suhum seat despite circulating reports suggesting he had reconsidered his candidacy.
The speculation spread rapidly after a photo of Asante with the Majority Leader went viral, shortly after the Speaker of Parliament indefinitely suspended parliamentary proceedings. However, Samuel Baah Gosh, spokesperson for the Kwadjo Asante Boafo campaign team, dispelled the claims in an interview with Channel One News, insisting that the MP is fully in the race.
“Suhum MP, Hon. Kwadjo Asante, is still contesting as an independent candidate for the Suhum constituency come December 7, 2024,” Gosh stated, dismissing any notion of a withdrawal.
Residents of the constituency have also weighed in, expressing confidence in their MP’s track record and commitment. One resident remarked, “I heard about it, but I saw online that he’s going independent, and I know he hasn’t been removed as an MP. The case is in court, and only the court can decide, not the Speaker of Parliament.”
Another resident praised Asante’s contributions, noting, “Opare Ansah was MP for 16 years, and we saw no development. Kwadjo Asante, on the other hand, brought us asphalt roads, hospitals, and markets. He should be allowed to continue.”
Supporters of the MP have been vocal in their support, but some have taken a more aggressive stance, issuing threats if he dares back out of the race. “If he steps down, we will burn his car. He promised to run for us, and we won’t accept any betrayal. He has brought real change to Suhum, and if he plays with our trust, we will retaliate.” Despite the threats and swirling rumors, Asante’s campaign remains steadfast. His decision to run as an independent follows mounting pressure from his supporters, who believe his leadership has brought tangible improvements to the constituency. As the election date nears, it’s clear that the Suhum MP intends to fight for another term, independent of the major political parties.
