The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has announced Liam Jacobs as its new representative in the City of Johannesburg Council, stepping in to replace the embattled Kenny Kunene.
PA President Gayton McKenzie unveiled Jacobs in a video statement, describing him as a rising star and a key player in the party’s mission to restore service delivery in Johannesburg.

“We want him to get the experience and help us fix the potholes and continue the good work that our deputy president has been doing. Congratulations to Liam. This is an opportunity to show people that you just do not complain and point out mistakes. This is your chance now to show people that you can lead.”
Jacobs, formerly affiliated with the Democratic Alliance (DA), recently joined the PA and is viewed as a promising young leader within the party. His deployment comes at a time when the city is grappling with political instability and calls for greater transparency in governance.
Liam Jacobs Steps in After Kunene Resigns Amid Allegations Linking Him to Murder Syndicate
Kunene’s resignation followed a dramatic police raid where he was reportedly found at the home of alleged criminal Katiso “KT” Molefe. Molefe has been linked to the murder of musician Oupa ‘DJ Sumbody’ Sefoka, which has sparked widespread public outrage.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of Council, Margaret Arnolds, Kunene officially stepped down as both Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport and as a PA councilor. His resignation comes in the wake of mounting scrutiny over his alleged association with Molefe, an alleged figure in a murder syndicate.
The incident has shaken the Johannesburg council and raised serious concerns about political accountability and integrity.

DA Demands Full Investigation into Kunene-Era Contracts
The Democratic Alliance has seized on the controversy, calling for a comprehensive probe into tenders awarded during Kunene’s tenure.
DA caucus leader in Johannesburg, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, has demanded that both the National Treasury and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) look into whether any contracts were improperly awarded.
“The award of those contracts and the investigation that we want should also verify if there was undue influence that Kenny Kunene has had over the awarding of those contracts,” said Kayser-Echeozonjoku. “We want to know whether those contracts were awarded to politically aligned individuals and contractors.”
As the fallout continues, the Office of the Speaker confirmed it has not yet received formal notification from the PA about Jacobs’ deployment. A statement released Monday said, “As the Mayor stated, the matter is now subject to police investigation.
“The only thing the Speaker will do is to wait for the Patriotic Alliance to communicate who they nominate to replace Mr. Kenny Kunene as a PR Councillor in the City.”
