The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has declined to reveal whether it reached out to French ambassador Nathi Mthethwa to appear as a witness. The commission has remained tight-lipped following his sudden death in Paris earlier this week.

Mthethwa’s body was discovered at a Paris hotel on Tuesday, with investigations still underway into the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Two weeks ago, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified before the commission, accusing Mthethwa of political interference in 2011 during his tenure as police minister.

Mkhwanazi alleged that Mthethwa blocked efforts to lay criminal charges against former Crime Intelligence head Richard Mdluli, who is accused of abusing his office and misusing the secret service account, often referred to as the “slush fund.”

When asked about Mthethwa’s possible involvement as a witness, commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels refused to comment.

“We are not going to be commenting at all about Ambassador Mthethwa’s passing, except to say we pass our sincere condolences to his family,” Michaels stated.
