Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has called for Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to appear before the Ad Hoc Committee investigating the allegations he made.

Speaking during a committee meeting, Malema made it clear that Mkhwanazi could not avoid scrutiny.

“The nation will not be told by Mkhwanazi what must happen,” Malema said. “If we are looking for him, we have to find him. And if he is not going to make himself available, we’re going to have to summon him.”

Malema argued that Mkhwanazi “started this mess” and should take responsibility, adding: “He is not going to tell us about commissions. We don’t know what the commission is doing. We’re not interfering with it. Mkhwanazi must be summoned. He is not going to tell us now that he is not available.”

Malema’s demands found support from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP). Committee member Mangaqa Albert Mncwango stressed that Mkhwanazi must not be allowed to avoid accountability.

“We should not open the gap for people to not be available when we need them. Otherwise, we are not going to meet our deadlines,” Mncwango cautioned.

Committee chairperson Soviet Lekganyane confirmed that Mkhwanazi, along with other senior police officials, had been formally invited to appear.

“By August 31, all invitations had gone out… There is no person who has been given a date of appearance before the committee. We requested a response before September 3. The first person who will appear before this committee is General Mkhwanazi,” Lekganyane said.

He further revealed that Mkhwanazi had responded positively, requesting to complete other engagements before making himself available.

“General Mkhwanazi requested the committee to allow him to continue with other engagements that he has until September 24. That is the period when he will be available,” Lekganyane explained.
