National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has once again alleged that his deputy, Shadrack Sibiya, and suspended police minister Senzo Mchunu collaborated to protect criminal syndicates in Gauteng.

Masemola wrapped up his two-day testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Tuesday, where he detailed his concerns about what he described as an “illegal instruction” to disband the political killings task team.

He also discussed Sibiya’s suspension and arrests linked to suspected underworld figures.

On 6 December last year, police launched two operations that led to the arrest of alleged crime boss Katiso “KT” Molefe and a raid on the home of businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

During the raid, officers seized Matlala’s phone, which Masemola claims exposed extensive corruption within the justice system. He testified that the device allegedly contained links to both Sibiya and Mchunu.

Masemola argued that the disbandment of the political killings task team served a single purpose: to shield criminal networks from investigation.

“There was no other motive but to prevent the investigations against the cartels in Gauteng that are involved in murder, drugs and so on,” Masemola told the commission.

The commissioner completed his testimony on Tuesday, with the inquiry scheduled to hear from the next witness on Thursday.
