The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party in Gauteng has confirmed that it will not support the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s motion of no confidence against Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

The DA recently announced plans to unseat Lesufi after a damning Public Protector report found that the Gauteng crime prevention wardens—commonly known as AmaPanyaza—were unlawfully established and lacked the legal authority to perform police functions.

Despite the controversy, the MK Party says Lesufi should not be removed for his efforts to tackle the province’s crime problem.

“There may have been problems before the seventh administration. We came as the MK, we are participating with them in all committees. We showed them our stance and we can’t support anything that is opportunistic,” said the MK Party’s caucus leader in the Gauteng legislature, Thabang Nkani.

Nkani emphasised that the party acknowledges the challenges within the provincial government but believes that punishing Lesufi for his crime-fighting initiatives would be unfair.

The MK Party maintains that the Premier’s actions were motivated by a genuine attempt to make Gauteng safer.

The decision comes as a setback for the DA, which had hoped to gain cross-party support for its motion following the Public Protector’s findings.

DA Faces Growing Resistance to No-Confidence Bid

The DA’s motion has faced additional hurdles as ActionSA has also withheld its support, insisting that the DA first secure backing from both the MK Party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

ActionSA further criticised the DA, arguing that it should apologise to Gauteng residents for initially voting Lesufi into office under the belief it would share power with the African National Congress (ANC).

With key opposition parties declining to lend their votes, the DA’s attempt to oust Lesufi appears increasingly unlikely to succeed.
