Patrice Motsepe has expressed renewed confidence in Africa’s ability to one day win the FIFA World Cup, following what he described as an encouraging performance by the continent’s ten representatives at the global showpiece.
Speaking in the aftermath of the tournament, the Confederation of African Football president praised the collective effort of African teams, insisting their displays have strengthened belief across the continent.
“We are proud of the performance,” Motsepe said. “We are more convinced than ever before that we can do much better in the next World Cups.”
Africa’s expanded presence at the tournament offered a broader platform to showcase its footballing progress, with several nations delivering competitive performances against some of the sport’s traditional powerhouses. While the ultimate prize remained out of reach, Motsepe suggested the gap between Africa and the global elite continues to narrow.
“We came close. African teams are as good as the best in the world,” he added, underlining a growing sense of parity on football’s biggest stage.
Beyond immediate results, Motsepe outlined a long-term vision centered on sustained growth and structural development. He stressed that achieving the dream of a first African World Cup triumph will depend on deeper investment in youth systems, stronger unity across football institutions, and closer collaboration with governments.
According to the CAF president, building a winning future requires more than talent alone. He pointed to the need for strategic planning, improved infrastructure, and consistent support at all levels of the game.
The ambition is clear. For Motsepe and CAF, the objective is no longer participation but ultimate victory. With confidence rising and structures gradually improving, Africa’s pursuit of World Cup glory appears increasingly driven by belief as much as potential.
