The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has officially withdrawn its threat to exit the Government of National Unity (GNU). The party had warned it would pull out if its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, was not reinstated to Johannesburg’s mayoral committee.

Although Kunene has not yet been reinstated, the PA says its Tuesday night meeting with the African National Congress (ANC) was productive. According to the party, the discussions went beyond Kunene’s return and tackled broader issues affecting Gauteng province.

Kunene later addressed supporters on Facebook, saying: “But I think one must emphasise that this meeting has put to bed the issue of the resignation of the president [McKenzie] or us withdrawing from coalitions. It has put it to bed.”

Without revealing specifics, Kunene confirmed that the ANC had tabled proposals that “made sense” and would be reviewed before a follow-up engagement.

“We will then get back to the ANC before Friday on our response to proposals on the table. But we must emphasise the meeting went very well for Patriotic Alliance,” Kunene said.
