Deputy President Paul Mashatile stressed the need to protect and celebrate South Africa’s cultural heritage during his keynote address at the National Heritage Day celebrations in Oudtshoorn on Wednesday.
“The theme, ‘Reimagine Our Heritage Institutions for a New Era,’ it encourages us to honour our history whilst looking to the future,” Mashatile said.

He noted that heritage institutions play a critical role in promoting cultural identity, unity, and creating economic opportunities.
Paul Mashatile Call to Confront Social Challenges
Mashatile urged South Africans to unite in addressing social ills that undermine progress, including substance abuse, crime, and racism.
He also underlined the importance of restoring dignity to African heritage through repatriation and restitution initiatives.
During his address, Mashatile paid tribute to Dr Omar Katrina Esau, the last fluent speaker of the endangered N|uu language.

“Her life’s work reminds us of the urgent responsibility to safeguard our intangible cultural heritage for future generations,” he said.
The Deputy President also acknowledged the crucial role of traditional leaders in defending the land and preserving heritage.

“Their legacy inspires the nation to build a united and inclusive society,” he added.
