The Himalayan region is known for its extreme climate, with icy winds and frigid temperatures making survival difficult for most wildlife. Yet in a surprising twist, a species usually found in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia has been sighted there for the first time, over 600 miles from its known range.

During the summer of 2023, researchers deployed 200 infrared cameras in the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve in southern Tibet to monitor local wildcats. Although this part of the reserve is milder than the iconic snow-covered peaks, it still lies within the heart of the Himalayas.

Within a month of installation, the cameras captured two separate sightings of a clouded leopard—on September 9 and again on September 16—marking a groundbreaking discovery for conservation efforts.

This marks the first recorded sighting of the species in Jilong County, approximately 620 miles from its previously known habitat in Medog County.

“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documentation of the clouded leopard in Jilong County,” the researchers stated, as reported by The Sacramento Bee.

Clouded leopards are listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List, with fewer than 6,000 adults estimated to remain in the wild. They are known to inhabit regions across South and Southeast Asia, including India, China, Malaysia, Nepal, and Thailand, with possible populations in Vietnam.

According to the study, their numbers have declined sharply in recent years due to deforestation and illegal poaching, posing significant threats to their survival.

The unexpected sighting suggests that clouded leopards may inhabit a broader range than previously thought. “This discovery suggests there may be other potential clouded leopard habitats in China beyond the four currently recognised sites,” the research group noted. They further added, “Further research in this region will promote international collaboration for the conservation of this species.”

This finding offers new hope for conservation efforts, indicating the possibility of undiscovered habitats and populations of clouded leopards in the region.
