The South African government has confirmed the passing of Ambassador Nkosinathi Emmanuel Mthethwa, the country’s top diplomat to the French Republic.

His death, currently under investigation by French authorities, has been described as a devastating blow to both the nation and the diplomatic community.

Mthethwa was appointed to the ambassadorial role in December 2023 and had since worked to strengthen bilateral relations between South Africa and France.

Tributes from Government and Diplomatic Circles

Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, paid tribute to Mthethwa, calling his passing not only a national tragedy but also a loss deeply felt within international diplomatic circles.

Mthethwa’s career spanned decades of dedicated public service. He previously served as Minister of Police and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture. He was also a board member of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Local Organising Committee.

Beyond government positions, Mthethwa played a vital role within the African National Congress, contributing to its highest decision-making structures. His long-standing service to South Africa has left an indelible mark on the country’s political and diplomatic landscape.
