Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe has dismissed recent allegations against her, claiming they form part of a coordinated misinformation campaign led by the department’s former spokesperson, Lumka Oliphant.

The minister’s response follows her appearance in Parliament on Wednesday, where she presented the department’s annual performance plan. In a statement released afterwards, the Department of Social Development rejected the claims as unfounded and aimed at damaging Tolashe’s reputation.

This comes as a leaked audio recording from an ANC MPs’ study group meeting surfaced, in which Tolashe is heard stating that she would not respond to questions unrelated to her ministerial duties.

Allegations Against Sisisi Tolashe And Department’s Response

The controversy surrounding Tolashe has intensified in recent days, with accusations including claims that she redirected a vehicle donation intended for the ANC Women’s League to her family, and may have used public funds to employ a nanny for her grandchildren.

In response, the Department of Social Development has strongly defended the minister, asserting that the allegations are unsubstantiated. The department specifically pointed to Oliphant, who was dismissed last year, as the source of what it describes as misleading claims.

However, Oliphant has rejected these assertions, maintaining that the minister is attempting to deflect attention from alleged maladministration within the department, including irregular appointments.

“I should be arrested like she should be arrested as we are talking now. Therefore, the minister must not divert the questions she needs to give to the president”.

Acting communications head Sandy Godlwana said Tolashe has been focused on addressing governance issues since taking office. According to Godlwana, the minister has implemented measures aimed at strengthening accountability and correcting past irregularities.

“These actions are in the best interest of the public and are essential to ensuring that resources reach the vulnerable communities the department serves. The minister will not be intimidated or distracted by attempts to derail this work.”

The department further indicated that Tolashe would provide a comprehensive account to Parliament on matters within her remit at an appropriate time.

Parliamentary Oversight And Upcoming Questions On Public Funds

Meanwhile, scrutiny is expected to continue in Parliament. Bridget Masango, chairperson of the Social Development Committee, confirmed that Tolashe will be required to respond to questions regarding the use of public funds during a scheduled meeting on Wednesday.

The session is likely to focus on the allegations currently circulating, as lawmakers seek clarity on the minister’s conduct and the department’s financial management.
