Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, Chief of the South African Army, met with Russian military officials during his second official visit to the country.

According to Russia’s Ministry of Defence, both sides discussed joint military projects aimed at improving the combat readiness of their respective armies and agreed to expand cooperation across multiple areas.

Mbatha is leading a South African military delegation that is also scheduled to visit Russian military academies and defence companies during the trip

The discussions were held with Colonel General Alexander Matovnikov, Russia’s Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Land Forces. Russia’s Defence Ministry said the meeting resulted in agreements to deepen collaboration between the two armies, although it did not disclose specific projects or timelines.

South Africa has sought to maintain a neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict while preserving close ties with Moscow through the BRICS bloc, which also includes Brazil, India, China and other emerging economies.

That balancing act has drawn scrutiny from Western governments, particularly after South Africa hosted joint naval exercises with Russia and China in 2023. Pretoria has consistently maintained that its foreign policy is based on non-alignment and dialogue rather than taking sides in global conflicts.

According to Russia’s Defence Ministry, Matovnikov thanked South Africa’s political and military leadership for what he described as its “firm position” toward Russia and its shared vision of a multipolar world.

The latest meeting comes as Russia continues to strengthen military and diplomatic ties with partners across Africa amid growing competition for influence on the continent.
