My AI Lawyer, a South African startup providing digital legal assistance services, has launched an artificial intelligence platform accessible via web and WhatsApp. The system offers users on-demand legal guidance regarding tenant rights, employment disputes, arrests and maintenance orders. Available for a subscription cost of R99 per month, the application allows users to ask questions through text or voice inputs and request the automated drafting of legal letters. The company offers a free trial period for new accounts.

The platform operates as a closed system to comply with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act. User information and legal queries do not serve as training data for external large language models. The backend architecture relies on Microsoft Azure, a cloud computing platform, storing information in encrypted databases that remain logically isolated within a multi-tenant environment. To ensure relevance to the local jurisdiction, South African lawyers trained the underlying model on the country’s legal framework.

While the application handles routine queries, the system includes a transfer protocol connecting users to qualified human legal advisors for complex or sensitive matters. Microsoft, the multinational software corporation, recognized the platform with its Global Inclusion Changemaker award, marking the first time an African project received this specific designation.

Darren Cohen, Head of Distribution and Marketing at My AI Lawyer, stated the application targets citizens who cannot afford traditional legal representation or do not qualify for state legal aid.

“Access to justice should not be a privilege, but a right. In reality, expensive hourly rates and intimidating jargon mean that too many South Africans are unable to access the legal advice and information they need to protect their rights,” said Cohen.

He added that the platform serves as an alternative for everyday legal challenges, bridging the gap between automated processing and professional counsel.

“When you’re unsure, or need more input, you can speak to one of our human lawyers. My AI Lawyer is an empathetic legal companion that understands South African law and enables you to connect with a qualified human advisor. It is digital when you want it, human when you need it,” says Cohen.
