    Team SA’s swimmers picked up on Saturday where they’d left off on Friday night at the African Youth Games when they continued their domination in the pool, writes Mark Lemke in Luanda.

    Swimming had contributed 10 medals to the overnight Team SA total of 28, but quickly delivered the medals that took Team SA’s total to 40, which surpasses the 33 medals they won at the previous Games in Algiers in 2018. The swimming team picked up another 12 on Saturday, taking that code’s haul to 22.

    Saturday’s Games action was all brought forward to accommodate athletes going to the opening ceremony later in the day.

    ATHLETICS

    Heats

    Boys 200m: Jayden Fourie won his heat in 21.57 and was fastest overall

    Girls 200m: Isabella Gunter was 2nd fastest overall in 24.74

    Finals

    Boys 200m: GOLD! Jayden Fourie 

    Boys shot put: SILVER! Dewald Bezuidenhout (18.92m)

    Boys medley relay: SILVER! Team SA (Jayden Fourie, Micah Africa, Emil Els, Jaydon Failie)

    Girls, 400m H: GOLD! Megan Nieman added the 400m hurdles gold to her 100m hurdles gold

    Girls hammer throw: Johanne Lamprecht finished 4th (39.20m)

    Girls shot put: GOLD! Johanne Lamprecht 

    Boys medley relay: SILVER! Team SA

    BADMINTON 

    The Team SA boys doubles team, Ricardo Vigario & Misha Bredell, secured their spot in tomorrow’s final four after beating Tunisia 2-0 (21-5, 21-9).

    The Team SA girls doubles team, Chloe Lai & Layla Niayesh, defeated one of the favourites, Algeria, 2-0 (21-12, 21-14), which sees them through to tomorrow’s semi finals. 

    Misha Bredell lost his singles quarter final match against Algeria 2-0 (21-18, 22-20) 

    Chloe Lai lost her singles quarter final match against Mauritius 2-0 (21-14, 21-13)

    The Team SA mixed doubles (Vigario/Lai) lost their quarter final to Nigeria in a closely contested match which went three sets, ending 2-1 (21-18, 18-21, 21-12)

    Semi-finals commence at 09:00 local time.

    BEACH VOLLEYBALL

    The Team SA beach volleyball boys were knocked out in the quarter finals. Bringing an end to their impressive campaign in the Angolan capital.

    Boys 200m freestyle: GOLD! Matthew Goller (1:55.34) and Kellen Jones 4th (1:58.90)

    Boys 200m backstroke: SILVER! Roelof Bartleman (2:12.48) and Kyle Snyders 4th (2:19.63) 

    Girls 50m butterfly: GOLD! Maya Mgcina (29.25)

    Girls 100m breaststroke: GOLD! Chanel Veldsman (1:10.99) and Saskua Kistnasami 5th (1:19.73)

    Girls 200m freestyle: GOLD! Bailey Lambert (2:06.85) and SILVER! Giuliana Vyncke (2:07.86) 

    Girls 200m backstroke: GOLD! Mila van der Linde (2:21.23) and SILVER! Arabella Bayly (2:23.58)

    Mixed 4x100m medley, GOLD! Team SA (Bailey Lambert, Cole Martin, Eric Kotze and Abigail Kotze) 4:09.66

    TABLE TENNIS

    Round 1 of the mixed doubles event kicked off this morning. 

    The Team SA partnership of Ruan Scholtz and Tamika van As lost to Uganda, but can still qualify for the round of 16 if they win their match against Malawi tomorrow.
