Swiss authorities are investigating after around 40 people were killed and about 100 were injured when an explosion and fire tore through the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana shortly after 01:30 on New Year’s morning, reports Cape {town} Etc.

According to Reuters, the Italian foreign ministry relayed that ‘Swiss police believe around 40 people died and 100 were injured’ in a statement to families and foreign missions, underlining the scale of the disaster as hospitals struggled to cope.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as flames spread through wooden ceilings and patrons tried to flee by narrow stairways and exits.

Emergency services dispatched dozens of ambulances and helicopters to the resort town as medical teams treated severe burn injuries.

‘What was meant to be a moment of joy turned, on the first day of the year in Crans-Montana, into mourning that touches the entire country and far beyond,’ Swiss President Guy Parmelin wrote on social media, offering condolences and urging calm (Al Jazeera).

Authorities said there is no indication of terrorism or arson and that forensic teams face a difficult task identifying victims because of the severity of injuries. A reception centre and helpline for worried relatives has been set up on +41 848 112 117.

Investigators will examine whether a candle or indoor pyrotechnics triggered the blaze as communities and families wait for further information.
