Last month, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) introduced a new rule requiring private sector companies in the UAE to pay employee salaries on the first day of every month, starting June 1, 2026. The move aims to strengthen wage protection and improve compliance. The new rules require that the establishments submit documentation and data confirming that salary payments have been made, and failure to do so will result in the MOHRE enforcing a series of measures.
5% VAT added to Salik gates in Dubai from June 1
You’ll soon be paying a bit more if you’re a motorist in Dubai. There’s a new 5% VAT tax that will be added to Salik toll gate usage fees and also Salik tag activation, the company announced. The company announced on a post on X that this 5% VAT will be applied and effective from June 1, 2026. Salik added that VAT amounts collected will be remitted to the UAE’s Federal Tax Authority in accordance with applicable laws and regulations in the country.

UAE confirms public holiday for Islamic New Year
On the occasion of the Islamic New Year, Monday, June 15, will be a day off for employees across both the public and private sectors, with work resuming the following day. For many residents, it means an extra day to relax, spend time with family or make plans before the working week begins again.

KHDA in Dubai to resume school inspections with short notice
Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority has announced the return of quality assurance visits from the 2026-27 academic year. Every eligible private school will receive one of two types of inspections designed to assess standards across teaching, learning, student wellbeing and school operations. Under the new approach, schools will either have a full quality assurance visit – commonly referred to as an inspection – or an alternative quality assurance review.

British Airways delays the return of flights to the Middle East until October
British Airways has pushed back its return to several key destinations across the region, including Dubai. The UK carrier has delayed its phased resumption of services to Dubai, along with routes to Tel Aviv, Bahrain and Amman. Flights to all four destinations were originally scheduled to restart from July 1, but will now remain suspended until October 25.

UAE petrol and diesel prices have increased
Possibly the most important bit of Dubai news this week: Fuel prices have increased once again for the month of June, with Special now at Dhs3.83 (an increase from Dhs3.55 in May). The lowest petrol price recorded this year was in February, when Super 98 cost Dhs2.45 per litre. Since then, prices have steadily increased, rising to Dhs2.59 in March, Dhs3.39 in April, Dhs3.66 in May and now Dhs3.95 in June. Diesal, however, has seen a decrease, dropping from Dhs4.69 to Dhs4.33 per litre.
