Solar and wind power technologies could be called mainstream today, and the days when their application was limited to only several industries are long gone. Investment in renewable sources has reached unprecedented levels, marking a major evolution in the energy sector. These changes became possible mainly due to developments in battery storage technologies, decreasing equipment prices, and the implementation of beneficial government policies favouring renewable technology development in different countries. Today, countries are willing to use renewable energy not only as a solution to climate issues but also as a measure aimed at ensuring energy independence from imported fossil fuel supplies and developing new branches of the economy.

Such technologies make it possible for developing countries to skip adopting traditional energy systems and instead create cleaner and more reliable infrastructure from scratch. But technology alone cannot solve the problem. The coming years will require more international cooperation, greater funding for developing economies, better national planning, and policies aimed at prioritising people over the sheer production of energy on a global scale. The race for renewable energy continues, and the problem now is ensuring that every family reaches the finish line regardless of its geographical position.

Despite being a significant achievement when compared to two decades ago, this number translates into nearly 655 million people still being without power in 2024. An alarming fact is that the pace of connecting communities has slowed down. If governments do not intensify their investment and reform efforts, the target of universal access to electricity by 2030 will not be accomplished. The cause of this slowdown is quite straightforward. Many countries have already connected the easiest locations to the grid. The remaining underserved communities are often situated in very remote places, such as mountainous regions, islands, or conflict zones, making it highly expensive and difficult to work in such areas. Besides, many families cannot afford either the connection fees or the electricity bill itself, even if the infrastructure is available. This implies that the next phase of electrification should involve smarter initiatives instead of simply building more power stations.
Why Africa Remains the Centre of the Challenge
According to the report, Sub-Saharan Africa faces the biggest difficulty in terms of power accessibility. In many rural regions, decentralised energy systems serve as effective solutions. Solar mini-grids and stand-alone solar home systems can supply electricity to communities where extending the national grid is economically or technically impossible. This technology is already changing the lives of many people in some underdeveloped countries where electricity is used for lighting, education, medicine, irrigation, and business.
The Energy Transition Must Be Fair
One of the most important messages from the report is that the energy transition should not be measured only by the number of solar panels installed or wind turbines constructed. A successful transition is one that improves people’s lives.
Climate action and social development should move forward together. A country cannot claim success if it builds thousands of megawatts of renewable energy while millions of its citizens still lack electricity or rely on polluting fuels for cooking. This principle is often described as a just and inclusive energy transition. It means ensuring that the shift towards cleaner energy creates opportunities for everyone, including rural communities, low-income households, women, and young people. For developing countries, clean energy can become a powerful driver of economic growth. Expanding renewable energy creates jobs in manufacturing, construction, engineering, operation, and maintenance. It improves energy security by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. It also supports cleaner air, better public health, and greater resilience against future energy price shocks.

Renewable energy is expanding at an unprecedented pace, technology continues to improve, and the cost of clean energy has fallen dramatically over the past decade. The next stage of the global energy transition must focus not only on generating cleaner electricity but also on ensuring that every person can benefit from it. Universal access to electricity and clean cooking should become equal priorities alongside expanding renewable energy capacity and improving energy efficiency. Governments, businesses, financial institutions, and international organisations all have a role to play. Success will depend on stronger cooperation, greater investment, better policies, and a shared commitment to ensuring that clean energy reaches every household, not just every power grid. The world has already shown that it can transform the way it produces energy. The greater challenge now is transforming the lives of the people who still remain without it.
