Former African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) member Tony Yengeni has been officially introduced as the second Deputy President of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Yengeni, who spent decades within the ANC, has now crossed over to Jacob Zuma’s party, marking a significant shift in his political journey. The announcement was made by Zuma during a media briefing held at the party’s provincial office in Durban on Thursday afternoon.

According to Zuma, Yengeni’s appointment is part of a broader leadership plan to strengthen the MK Party’s operations. He will oversee internal affairs while the current Deputy President, John Hlophe, focuses primarily on parliamentary duties.

Zuma Welcomes ‘Long-Time Comrade’ Into Leadership

Speaking at the briefing, MK Party leader Jacob Zuma said, “We’ve decided to drag one of our cadres we’ve been with for years; that comrade of ours is going to join us in the leadership – the top leadership is Tony Yengeni.”

Yengeni’s political career has deep roots in the liberation struggle, having served in the ANC for many years. However, in recent times, his relationship with the party became strained.

The ANC’s Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, had previously threatened to take disciplinary action against him for alleged ill-discipline.

Yengeni is expected to play a central part in driving the MK Party’s organisational direction as it continues to expand its political presence across South Africa.
