Waratahs lock Miles Amatosero could be facing suspension after a training-ground fight left teammate Angus Scott-Young with a fractured eye socket and in doubt for the opening round of Super Rugby.

Rugby Australia is finalising an investigation into an incident that occurred during a Waratahs pre-season session earlier this month, with training footage forming part of the review.

Scott-Young, who joined the Waratahs in December after returning from English Premiership side Northampton, was injured during a live training simulation. The clash escalated following an off-the-ball tackle, with sources confirming Amatosero struck Scott-Young on two separate occasions before teammates intervened.

There is understood to be no prior history between the pair. Amatosero apologised after the session and the matter was initially handled internally by the Waratahs.

While skirmishes at training are not uncommon during pre-season, the seriousness of Scott-Young’s injury prompted Rugby Australia and the Waratahs to formally investigate whether Amatosero breached the code of conduct. Rugby Australia owns the NSW franchise.

Amatosero has not been stood down and is currently with the Waratahs at a training camp in Mudgee, but could face suspension during the side’s trial matches against Queensland and the Brumbies later this month.
