Western Province Women have broken the spell, edging Southern Gauteng to win their maiden Spar SA Indoor Hockey Inter-Provincial Tournament title at the Beaulieu College in Johannesburg, on Saturday, 1 March, 2025.

It was a case of victory at last for Western Province when they beat Southern Gauteng in incredibly tight final at the conclusion of the 2025 IPT, which would always crown a new champion after Province thumped the Raiders 6-0 at their semi-final tie on Friday.

Having last won the title in 2019, Southern Gauteng was the only team to reach the knockout phase unbeaten, and put up a furious effort in Saturday’s final, but it was Top Goal Scorer of the Tournament Kayla de Waal’s 15th minute strike that broke the shackles to allow Western Province to celebrate a first-ever Indoor IPT title in the Women’s A section.

Emily Macquet and Anja Tromp scored for Northern Blues as they shook off their semi-final disappointment to secure a bronze medal with a 2-0 win over KZN Raiders.

WP Peninsula saw an early Ruby Kraus brace set them on the road for what was ultimately a comfortable 3-0 win over Mpumalanga, their victory meaning that the women’s team emulate the men’s as the highest “B side” in the tournament.

Western Province Jamie Southgate tracks another Southern Gauteng threat in Saturday’s 2025 title match.

Southern Gauteng captain Robyn Johnson had valiantly steered her unbeaten team, but a win in the final was a bridge too far in the evenly-contested tie.

North West led 3-1 thanks to a Tara Myburgh hat-trick before Daniella Hunziker from Witsies levelled to ensure that the relegation match would be decided by a shootout. After the two turns each it was still level, before Keovaan Jansen from Witsies delivered the killer blow relegate the North West ladies to the B Section.

Nicole Smuts was the hero for the Northerns Invitational side as they dispatched of the challenge of the Southerns Invitational in the Women’s B-Section final, having led from the third minute and never looked back winning 6-1.

The B Section bronze medal was won by KZN Inland with a Kelly Trimborns double along with two more goals were enough to secure a 4-0 win over Eastern Gauteng.
