what to do on a day trip to the West Coast

There’s something about the West Coast that feels like an exhale, a slow, salty release from the rush of the city.

Just an hour or so from Cape Town, this coastline of powdery beaches, whitewashed towns and briny seafood joints is made for easy summer escapes. If you’ve only got a day to spare, you can still soak up the best of the region with a simple, sun-drenched itinerary that captures everything the West Coast does best: nature, food, charm and stillness.

Start early with a scenic drive

Beat the traffic and head out as the city starts to yawn awake. The R27 is a classic coastal route, hugging dunes and fynbos with crisp Atlantic views. Roll down the windows, that West Coast smell of salt, veld and sunscreen is the first part of the experience.

If you have time for a small detour, stop at the West Coast National Park gate just after opening. Early mornings here are quiet and golden, with velvety light pouring over the lagoon. Even outside flower season, the park is rich with birdlife, cycling paths and stretches of water that ripple in soft, sherbet colours.

Inside the park, Kraalbaai is the West Coast at its most serene: houseboats bobbing lazily, water so clear you can count ripples on the sand, and pale beaches perfect for strolling. Pack a simple picnic breakfast (think pastries, fruit and iced coffee) and enjoy it right on the water’s edge. There’s no rush here; just let the morning unfold.

    Beach time in Langebaan

From the park, drive into Langebaan, the West Coast’s laid-back holiday town where the pace shifts into beach mode instantly. Spend an hour or two on Langebaan Main Beach, watching kiteboarders weave colour across the sky, or walk along the shoreline with your feet in the cool water.

If you prefer something active, rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and spend some time gliding across the calm lagoon, one of the best places in South Africa for beginner-friendly paddling.

    Seafood lunch with a view

The West Coast does seafood the way it should be: fresh, unfussy and full of character. For a true local experience, book ahead at Die Strandloper, where a multi-course seafood feast unfolds right on the sand. Think mussels cooked over open fires, smoky snoek, meltingly tender crayfish (when in season), roosterkoek dripping with butter and that unmistakable ocean breeze.

If you want something quicker or less of a commitment, opt for Friday Island, The Sand Bar, or Pearly’s, which all offer casual, breezy lunches with views of shimmering water.

    Explore Paternoster’s whitewashed charm

No perfect West Coast day is complete without a drive further north to Paternoster, one of the oldest fishing villages in the country. The white homes, bright fishing boats and cobalt-blue sea feel like stepping inside a postcard.

Stroll through the village’s small boutiques and galleries, pop into Stone Fish Studio for local ceramics, or meander along the quiet beach. If you’re craving dessert, stop for gelato or a slice of cake at a local café, everything tastes sweeter with sea air on your lips.

    Afternoon sundowners at Cape Columbine

Just before day’s end, make your way to the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, home to the striking Columbine Lighthouse and wild, rugged coastline. This area is famous for its dramatic boulder formations and pockets of turquoise water, a completely different energy to the calmness of Langebaan.

Find a rock with a view and settle in for sundowners. A simple cooler with cold drinks and snacks is all you need. The sky here does magical things in summer, streaks of peach, amber and dusty purple melt together as waves crash against the rocks. It’s a moment that feels both grounding and otherworldly.

Slow drive back to the city

After sunset, take your time heading back. The road is quiet, and the air is cool after a hot day. You’ll return home sandy, sun-kissed and fully reset — all the things a perfect summer day should leave you feeling.
