The much-anticipated Wings Over Winelands Airshow has officially been cancelled after severe weather battered parts of the Western Cape and caused damage at Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West.

Organisers confirmed the decision on Tuesday following an assessment of the venue and surrounding infrastructure after the province experienced intense storms and damaging winds linked to recent weather warnings. The event had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, 16 May.

According to organisers, safety concerns for pilots, crew members, staff and spectators ultimately led to the cancellation. Aircraft travelling from Gauteng to the Western Cape for the show were also unable to continue with planned ferry movements due to the conditions and damage at the venue.

The airshow was expected to draw aviation enthusiasts from across the country, with displays from teams such as the Marksman Aerobatic Display Team and the Aero L-29 Delfín jet display originally included in the programme. Gourmet food stalls, wine tastings and family-friendly entertainment had also been planned as part of the event experience.

The cancellation comes as the South African Weather Service continues to warn of disruptive conditions across parts of the country. Strong winds, rough coastal conditions and localised flooding have affected several regions in the Western Cape in recent days.

Organisers said ticket holders will receive full refunds through Quicket, while a possible new date for the airshow may be announced once conditions improve.
